Steam Cleaning
Steam Cleaning NYC: Sofas, Upholstery and Mattresses
Most of what gets sold as steam cleaning is hot water extraction, and for most fabric that is the right tool. What matters is how much water goes in and how much comes back out, especially in a New York apartment where nothing dries fast.
Two machines share the name steam cleaner
A dry vapor steamer heats a small amount of water into vapor and puts out very little moisture. It is good for sanitizing hard surfaces and small spot work, and it does not remove much soil from deep in a cushion.
A hot water extractor is what a cleaner means when they offer to steam clean your sofa or carpet. Heated solution goes into the fibers under pressure and is vacuumed straight back out, taking the soil with it. For fabric, extraction is almost always the one you want.
Why the rental machine made it worse
Store rental steamers put plenty of water in and pull far less back out. The foam holds the rest, which is how you get water rings, a sour smell and brown patches on light fabric a day later. Hard city tap water adds mineral rings of its own.
When steam is the wrong answer
S and X coded fabrics, most velvets, silk blends and anything leather. Those get a dry solvent method or a hand clean instead. Leather is covered on the leather sofa cleaning page.
Starting prices
Steam cleaning NYC visits are priced the same as our regular service, because it is the same service. Extraction is priced by the piece, not by the method, and the full list is on the pricing page.

Most requests to steam clean a couch in NYC come after something has already gone wrong: a rental machine that left the cushions damp for two days, or a smell that came back worse once the fabric dried. The fix is the same both times. Heat loosens the soil, but it is the extraction pass that pulls the dirty water and residue back out of the foam.
We run more drying passes than cleaning passes, which is what separates a sofa that is usable by evening from one that sits wet overnight. Full detail on the sofa cleaning process.
Steam Cleaning for Upholstery
Dining chairs, headboards and accent chairs take fabric steam cleaning well when the tag says W or WS. Seat pads get pretreated first because food and hand oil do not lift with heat alone. Headboards are cleaned on the wall, with the moisture kept low so nothing runs down behind them.
S coded pieces are a different job and never get steam. See upholstery cleaning by fabric code for how each tag is handled.
Furniture Steam Cleaning Services
A whole room in one visit is the usual booking: sofa, armchairs, ottoman and dining seats done together so everything dries on the same schedule. It is also cheaper than booking pieces separately, because setup is most of the time on any job. See furniture cleaning for how a visit is quoted.
Can You Steam Clean a Mattress?
Yes, with less water than a sofa gets. A mattress is thick foam with nowhere for moisture to drain, so a mattress steam clean uses a low moisture pass, an allergen treatment and a long extraction. Soaking one is how mattresses end up smelling of mildew a week later. More on mattress cleaning.
Carpet Steam Cleaning
Wall to wall carpet and synthetic rugs are where hot water extraction does its best work. Wool is the exception: it shrinks and bleeds if it is treated like synthetic broadloom, so the fiber is checked at an edge first. Stairs are counted per flight. Full rates on carpet cleaning.
Five steps, and the last one matters most
Care code first
The tag under the cushion decides whether water is allowed at all. No tag means a hidden area test before anything else happens.
Dry vacuum
Loose grit comes out before any moisture goes in, so it is not turned into mud inside the fibers.
Pretreat
Food, body oil and pet soil each get their own pretreatment. Heat on its own does not break them down.
Extraction at controlled heat
Hot enough to loosen soil, not so hot that it sets protein stains or damages synthetic fibers.
Drying
Extra extraction passes, then an air mover in rooms with poor airflow. Most sofas are dry to the touch in two to four hours.
Steam cleaning questions from New York apartments
Can you steam clean furniture without soaking it?
That is the whole skill. A steam clean furniture job done properly leaves the fabric damp to the touch, never wet, because the solution is vacuumed back out behind the wand on the same pass. Steam furniture cleaning that leaves a cushion heavy has put in more water than it took out.
Do you steam clean couches in Manhattan and Harlem?
Yes. A steam clean couch nyc booking is the same rate in every borough, and steam cleaning Manhattan NY addresses are closest to us because the van loads on East 116th Street. Steam cleaning Harlem NY and South Harlem jobs are often same day for that reason.
Is a rented steam cleaner as good as hiring one?
A rental machine heats less and pulls less. The steam cleaner nyc hardware stores rent out has roughly a quarter of the vacuum lift of a truck mount, so it puts water in and leaves much of it behind. That is why steam cleaning couches with a rental often looks worse a week later.
Is steam cleaning the same as hot water extraction?
Technically no, in practice yes. When a cleaner offers to steam clean a sofa or carpet, the machine is almost always a hot water extractor: heated solution goes into the fibers and is vacuumed straight back out with the soil. A true dry vapor steamer puts out very little water and is better suited to hard surfaces and small spot work.
Will steam cleaning kill bed bugs?
Heat kills bed bugs it reaches directly, but a cleaning visit is not a pest treatment and should not be relied on as one. Bugs hide in frames, seams and walls that no cleaning touches. If you suspect bed bugs, book a licensed exterminator first and have the furniture cleaned once the treatment is finished.
How long does a steam cleaned couch take to dry?
Two to four hours to the touch, and fully dry overnight. Rooms with windows on one side only, which describes most New York apartments, get an air mover left running to keep that timing honest.
Can steam cleaning shrink or damage my sofa?
It can if the method ignores the care code. S coded fabrics such as many velvets and silk blends shrink or water stain when they get wet, and some older cushions brown if they are overwetted. That is why we read the tag, test a hidden area, and switch to a dry solvent method when water is the wrong answer.
Can steam cleaning make a stain worse?
It can, if heat goes on before the stain is broken down. High temperature sets protein and some dye stains into the fibre permanently. That is why pre treatment comes first and heat second. Anyone going straight in with a steam wand is working in the wrong order.
Can I use a handheld steamer on my sofa myself?
On most fabric, no. A handheld steamer puts heat and water into the fibre with no way to pull either back out, so the moisture reaches the foam and stays there. On wool and viscose the heat also shrinks the weave, and that is permanent.
