How Much Does Upholstery Cleaning Cost in NYC?
Short answer: $30 to $55 for a dining chair, $120 to $180 for a standard three seat sofa, and $180 to $380 for a sectional depending on its size. The longer answer is what moves a quote inside that range, and what a suspiciously cheap one usually leaves out.
How Much Does Upholstery Cleaning Cost, Piece by Piece
These are starting ranges for fabric pieces across the five boroughs. The final number is confirmed after we see the fabric and the soil level, and always before any work begins. The same figures appear on the pricing page.

Five things move a quote inside the range
The care code. A W or WS tag means water based extraction, which is the quicker method. An S code means solvent only, which takes longer and costs more even on a smaller piece. A velvet dining chair can cost more than a synthetic sofa twice its size.
Size and seams. Sectionals are quoted by section, not as one item. Corner sections and chaises hold most of the soil, which is why a six seat sectional is roughly double a three seat sofa rather than double the seat count.
Soil level. Routine maintenance cleaning sits at the bottom of each range. Years of body oil on a headrest, pet accidents that reached the cushion core, or food ground into a dining seat all need pretreatment before extraction.
How many pieces. Setup and breakdown is most of the time on any job, so five pieces in one visit costs far less than five separate visits. This is the single biggest lever you control.
What it is not. The floor you live on, the borough, and whether the building has an elevator do not change our price, and a certificate of insurance is free.
Why the price is a range and not one number
The reason nobody can answer how much does upholstery cleaning cost in a single number over the phone is simple: nobody can see a care tag from there. The tag sits under a cushion or on the dust cover beneath the frame, and it decides the method, the time and therefore the cost. A quote given without it is a guess, and guesses move once the technician arrives, which is where most billing disputes start.
The honest version is a range on the phone and a confirmed figure in your living room before anything is switched on. If you want to narrow it yourself before calling, flip a seat cushion and look for a small white tag with a letter on it. The upholstery cleaning page explains what each letter allows.
Cleaning versus replacing, in New York numbers
A mid range sofa in New York City runs $800 to $3,000 at retail. Delivery to a walk up adds $75 to $200 depending on the flights, and getting the old one out of the building costs another $75 to $200 if the city bulk pickup date is too far away.
Against that, professional cleaning runs $120 to $380 for almost any sofa on the list above. The gap is usually somewhere between $700 and $3,000, which is why cleaning is worth trying first on anything structurally sound. If the frame is broken or the foam has collapsed, cleaning will not fix either, and we will say so rather than take the booking.
What a very cheap quote usually leaves out
A flat $59 sofa price is normally a shampoo pass with no extraction, which leaves detergent in the fabric. Residue attracts soil faster than clean fiber does, so the piece looks acceptable for two weeks and then worse than before. Rental machines cause the same problem, discussed on the steam cleaning page.
The other common gaps are no fiber or care code test, add-ons billed on the day for pretreatment that should have been included, and no certificate of insurance when your building asks for one at the door. Ask about all four before booking anyone, including us. Two related guides sit on the blog: cleaning a fabric couch at home and how often a sofa needs cleaning.
Common questions about upholstery cleaning cost
What does upholstery cleaning cost per seat?
Roughly $40 to $60 a seat for standard fabric, which is where the $120 to $180 three seat range comes from. Sectionals are quoted by section rather than per seat, because corner sections and chaises hold most of the soil and take longest. The free estimate confirms the figure before any work starts.
Is it worth hiring someone or renting a machine?
A rental machine runs on New York tap water, which carries 50 to 100 milligrams per litre of dissolved mineral that stays in the fiber as white rings. It also leaves detergent behind, which pulls soil back faster than clean fiber. For one small spot a rental is fine. For a whole sofa it usually costs you twice.
What is the cost of upholstery cleaning for a sofa, start to finish?
For one sofa, $95 to $180 in almost every case. The cost for couch cleaning rises with seat count first, fabric code second and stain work third. Nothing is added for stairs, parking or travel inside the five boroughs.
How much to get a sofa cleaned if it has never been done?
The same rate. A first clean takes longer because years of body oil need dwell time, but the cost of cleaning a couch is set by its size and fabric, not by how long it has been left. What a first clean does change is how much we will promise on old set stains.
Does upholstery cleaning cost more in Manhattan than the outer boroughs?
Not with us. The same piece costs the same in Tribeca, Flushing or Great Neck, and stairs are not charged as an extra. Some companies do price by neighbourhood, so it is worth asking directly rather than assuming.
Is there a minimum charge?
In practice the visit rather than the piece is what makes a booking worth doing. A single dining chair is rarely worth a trip for either side, which is why most quotes are built around a room or a set of pieces.
Why is a sectional so much more than a sofa?
Because it is more fabric and more seams, and it is quoted by section. A six seat sectional with a chaise has roughly twice the surface of a three seat sofa, and the corner sections hold most of the soil because that is where people sit.
What does a whole apartment cost?
It depends on the piece list, but booking together always costs less than booking separately, because setup and breakdown is most of the time on any job. Give the full list on the phone and the visit gets quoted as one number.
How much should move out upholstery cleaning cost?
The same as any other visit, because it is the same work. A sofa and a rug before a walkthrough runs $200 to $310 together. Landlords sometimes bill tenants more than that for the identical job, so get your own quote before accepting a deduction from a deposit.
Want the number for your own pieces?
Tell us what the pieces are and roughly how old they are. That is usually enough for an accurate range over the phone.
