Couch Cleaning Upper West Side: Pre War Rooms

Classic sixes on West End Avenue, radiator heat all winter, and a velvet sofa under the window taking all of it. We clean in the room, through the service entrance, with the certificate sent ahead.

Sofas and Sectionals

Professional Sofa Cleaning on the Upper West Side

A pre war living room on West End Avenue or Riverside Drive has one good wall for a sofa and a radiator under the window beside it. The piece spends every winter next to dry heat and every evening holding a family.

Dry heat does something specific to upholstery. It pulls moisture out of the fiber, which makes the pile brittle and lets dust sit deeper in the weave than it would otherwise. The professional sofa cleaning method starts with the care code and works around that.

Velvet and Chenille

Upholstery Cleaning in Manhattan NY

Velvet, chenille and mohair are the Upper West Side fabrics. They are not fragile, but the pile is directional, so a job finished without grooming looks patchy even when the fabric is completely clean.

Pile gets brushed back in one direction while it is still damp. A lot of what people take for a water stain on velvet is nothing but disturbed nap. Our upholstery service by fabric code explains the rest.

Carpet and Rugs

Carpet and Hallway Runner Cleaning

The long entry hall is a pre war signature and so is the runner down it. Everyone who enters walks the same two feet of it, so it wears in a stripe rather than evenly.

Wool runners get dye stability tested at an edge, then a low moisture method and forced drying. See how fiber changes the approach.

Bedrooms

Mattress Cleaning on the Upper West Side

Bedrooms here face a courtyard more often than the street, which means less air movement and more humidity held in the room through the summer.

A mattress added to a sofa visit costs far less than a separate appointment, because setup is most of the labour. See what mattress cleaning involves.

Pricing

Couch Cleaning Upper West Side: What It Costs

The rate is the same across Manhattan. Nothing is added for a Central Park West address, a service elevator, or four flights in a rent stabilized walk up in the nineties.

What does change the figure is the number of pieces. A sofa, the hall runner and two bedroom mattresses in one visit is quoted as a single number, and it comes out well below four separate bookings.

Starting prices

Standard 3-seat sofa $120 to $180
Loveseat or 2-seat $95 to $140
Sectional, L shape $180 to $280
Whole apartment, 3+ pieces Quoted per visit

Same prices across Manhattan. No charge for stairs, the service entrance or the certificate of insurance.

What a Pre War Co-op Job Involves

Couch cleaning Upper West Side visits are mostly co-op buildings, and co-op buildings mean paperwork before furniture. The managing agent wants a certificate of insurance naming the building, the super wants to know which service elevator and when, and the front desk wants a name on a list. All of it is normal and all of it is free.

Send the building name and managing agent when you book and the certificate goes over the same day. Tell us the apartment line as well, because a C line with a long hall and a tight turn at the kitchen door needs equipment that breaks into carry pieces.

The walk ups in the nineties and above Columbia are a different job again. Four flights, no elevator and often a sublet with furniture nobody in the apartment chose. Those get cleaned in the room with no piece going down the stairs.

Riverside Park is why so much of this work is pet related. A dog that walks the park daily brings the park home in its coat and leaves it on the nearest cushion.

Does radiator heat dry out upholstery in a pre war apartment?

It does. Steam heat runs from October to May in most pre war buildings and cannot be turned down much, so the room sits dry for seven months. Fiber loses moisture, pile goes brittle and dust works deeper into the weave. It also means upholstery dries fast after cleaning, often inside two hours in winter.

We work the whole west side and across the park. Start at the Manhattan service area, or go straight to a neighbour:

Questions

Questions From Upper West Side Customers

Will my co-op board need a certificate of insurance?

Almost certainly. Send the building name and the managing agent as they write them and we issue a certificate naming them before the visit, at no charge. Most Upper West Side managing agents want it two or three days ahead, so book with a little room.

Can you clean velvet without leaving it patchy?

Yes, and the patchiness people worry about is pile direction rather than a stain. Velvet and chenille are groomed in one direction while still damp so the nap lies flat and the colour reads evenly. Skipping that step is what makes a clean sofa look marked.

I am on the fifth floor of a walk up near Columbia. Is that extra?

No. Stairs are part of working in this city and are never charged. Tell us the floor when you book so we bring the setup that breaks into carry pieces rather than one unit that will not make the turn.

Do you use the service elevator or the passenger one?

Whichever the building requires, which in most pre war co-ops is the service elevator with the porter present. Let us know the hours it runs. Buildings that restrict it to weekday mornings are common and we book inside that window.

How long will the sofa take to dry in winter?

Usually under two hours with the radiators on, which is faster than summer. Dry heat works in your favour here. We still set air movers rather than leaving it to the room, because even drying matters more than fast drying.
